Wirtgen-compatible milling picks: a guide to shank sizes and drum configurations
If you run Wirtgen machinery or any machine that takes a 22mm or 20mm round shank pick this guide covers exactly what PPA stocks, what each pick is designed for, and how to work out which one suits your application.
The two shank sizes: 22mm and 20mm
PPA stocks picks in two shank diameters. The right one for you depends entirely on your machine and application.
22mm shank: suited to stabilisers, cold recyclers, and cold milling machines with 22mm holders. Compatible with Wirtgen WR series machines and other machines running 22mm holder systems.
20mm shank: suited to cold milling and road profiling machines with 20mm holders. Compatible with Wirtgen W series and other machines running 20mm holder systems.
If you’re unsure which shank your machine takes, pull an existing pick and measure the shank diameter, or send us your machine model and we’ll confirm.

22mm picks: PPA6HS/22 and PPARZZ22/22
PPA stocks two options in the 22mm range, suited to different ground conditions and machine outputs.
PPA6HS/22, our best seller.
The PPA6HS/22 has a pointed tungsten carbide tip with 30.8g of virgin tungsten carbide. The pointed tip geometry is well suited to standard stabilisation and recycling work — it cuts efficiently through road base, granular subgrade, and bitumen emulsion mixes without excessive resistance. This is the go-to pick for most stabiliser and cold recycler applications in typical Australian civil conditions.
Suited to: soil stabilisation, cold recycling, pavement rehabilitation, general road base work.
PPARZZ22/22 flat top tip, made for heavy duty conditions.
The PPARZZ22/22 is built for tougher ground. It carries 50g of tungsten carbide in a larger, flat top tip configuration significantly more carbide mass than the PPA6HS/22. The carbide wear resistance is increased by more than 30%, making this pick suited to high-power machines working in abrasive conditions: rocky subgrade, gravel, hard aggregate, and mixed material with high impact loading.
If you’re seeing faster-than-expected wear on standard picks, or your site conditions include rock, the PPARZZ22/22 is worth considering before you assume the problem is supplier quality.
Suited to: high-power stabilisers and recyclers, abrasive and rocky subgrade, hard aggregate, tough mixed ground conditions.

20mm picks: PPA6HS/20 and PPA7HS/20
PPA’s 20mm range covers cold milling and road profiling applications. Both picks fit machines with 20mm shank holders including Wirtgen W series cold milling machines and other profiling machines running 20mm holders.
PPA6HS/20 Australia’s favourite profiling pick.
The PPA6HS/20 carries 30.8g of virgin tungsten carbide and is the standard option for cold milling and profiling work in typical conditions including asphalt removal, pavement profiling, and surface rehabilitation on low to medium abrasion material.
Suited to: cold milling, road profiling, asphalt removal, surface rehabilitation in standard conditions.
PPA7HS/20 higher carbide content for harsh conditions.
The PPA7HS/20 carries 41.5g of tungsten carbide, more carbide mass than the PPA6HS/20 and is suited to more demanding milling applications where abrasion or hardness is higher. If you’re milling through recycled aggregate, hard asphalt, or material with higher abrasion than standard, the PPA7HS/20 will give you better wear life.
Suited to: cold milling in higher abrasion conditions, hard asphalt, recycled aggregate content, higher output applications.
Which pick do i need?
A quick reference:
- Stabiliser or cold recycler, standard ground → PPA6HS/22
- Stabiliser or cold recycler, rocky, abrasive or high-power machine → PPARZZ22/22
- Cold milling or profiling, standard asphalt → PPA6HS/20
- Cold milling or profiling, hard or abrasive material → PPA7HS/20
Not sure? Send us your machine model and a brief description of the material you’re cutting and we’ll tell you exactly which pick to use.
