How it started: the trial program that ran before PPA existed
PPA didn’t start with a business plan. It started with a stabilisation company we worked closely with, and a problem they kept running into.
In 2025, picks were one of their biggest running costs on road projects across WA. OEM prices kept climbing / supply was getting harder to rely on. Every drum change cost more than the last. So we asked a simple question: could we find a pick that did the job just as well, for less?
Proving it on real jobs first
We didn’t want to sell anything that hadn’t been proven in the ground. So before PPA existed, we sourced picks from the manufacturers we now work with and offered them to that stabilisation company to trial on their machines.
Not a test bed. Real stabilisation jobs, in real ground, with operators who knew exactly how their usual picks wore.
For months, on abrasive ground, the operators noticed – the picks held up. They wore on par with what we’d been running, at a lower cost per pick.
Then we asked others to try them
One company’s results aren’t enough to build a business on. So we sent picks to other contractors to run on their own jobs.
The feedback matched what we’d seen on the first trial. They told us the picks wore on par with OEM, and some said better.
That was the point we knew there was something worth offering to the wider industry.
Why that still shapes how we work
PPA was built on proving the product in the field before selling it. That shows up in how we operate:
- We don’t sell anything we haven’t tested
- We’ve visited the factory and know who makes our picks
- We hold stock in WA, because we know what a stalled machine costs
- We’re happy for you to trial picks before you commit
